For the last couple of years, most people’s experience of AI has looked like this, you ask a question, the chatbot answers, you ask a follow-up, it answers again. Useful, occasionally brilliant, sometimes hilariously overconfident, but fundamentally conversational.
Agentic AI is a shift in category.
Instead of talking about work, agentic AI can do work. You give it a goal, it makes a plan, uses tools, completes steps, checks progress, and (increasingly) asks for help only when it’s stuck. Think less “polite assistant in a chat window” and more “junior colleague who can actually open the spreadsheet, run the analysis, draft the email, and assemble the slide deck”.
